Warrnambool

Despite being chock full of historical buildings and landmarks dating back to the 1850s, Warrnambool is the ideal launchpad for a contemporary coastal getaway as a couple, or a low-key family adventure.

Relish some down time with stunning views over dinner and a luxury spa experience, go hiking across a natural reserve or visit a contemporary gallery tucked among historic buildings. There are countless ways to curate your trip to this unique city and region, found near the end of Great Ocean Road.

And if you time your trip right, between June and September you’ll be able to see southern right whales gather near Logan's Beach.

Highlights
  • Polish off some breakfast and coffee at Rough Diamond
  • Explore wetlands and Indigenous history at Moyjil.
  • Save on the ideal family stay at the NRMA Warrnambool Riverside Holiday Park.
  • Pamper yourself at Deep Blue'shot springs.

Where to eat

As the name suggests, Rough Diamond is a jewel in Warrnambool’s coffee crown, delivering premium speciality coffee and refined, yet simple fare. In the heart of the major dairy farming region, Allansford Cheese World brings together a museum, free cheese tastings, a licensed restaurant, and a wide selection of local and regional wines. Combining exquisite food, with world-class views of the Southern Ocean and friendly service, Pippies by the Bay is the complete dining experience. Enjoy an evening drink on the balcony or warm up on the couch in front of the fireplace.

There is also the jewel of the beach, Pavillion Cafe and Bar, another perfect spot to take in beautiful views of the Lady Bay and Middle Islands over breakfast, or a late nightcap at the bar.

What to do

Warrnambool's historic buildings are well loved, but it also provides all the culture you’d find in a contemporary city, with a thriving arts scene amongst venues like the Warrnambool Art Gallery and Lighthouse Theatre.

If you’re more of a nature enthusiast, Warrnambool is also home to plenty of parks, gardens, rivers and reserves, but visits to both the Tower Hill Wildlife Reserve and Hopkins Falls are must-sees. With attractions like the Thunder point Reserve with its beautiful coastal wetlands and rocky ocean scenery and Moyjil – a site of great Indigenous significance with human occupation estimated to date back at least 35,000 years, there is endless coastline to explore throughout the region.

Where to stay

Along the banks of the Hopkins River you’ll find NRMA Warrnambool Riverside Holiday Park. From NRMA members savings, to plenty of activities for kids on-site, and suggestions to help you find local walking trails, whale watching and more — we have you covered.

Travelling without the kids or looking to sneak in some pampering during a family trip? The perfect luxury stopover at the end of Great Ocean Road waits for you at the Warrnambool Retreat. For more award-winning rest and relaxation, there is nothing quite like Deep Blue. This wellness sanctuary provides access to a hot springs via perfectly manicured rock pools, as well as day spa services, and a bathhouse.
